You might have noticed that for about the last year, we’ve been focusing as a family on different virtues. We’re using The Family Virtues Guide as a resource. Our current focus is on Unity. This got me thinking today as I sat in the airport. I thought about all the ways that we, as part of this great human family separate ourselves from one another. Christians frequently label atheists and muslims as evil. Liberals call conservatives nazis, conservatives refer to liberals as communists. Blacks continue to distrust whites, religious versus non-religious, Christians versus Muslims, Christians versus Mormons,etc etc. Do we ever take the time to appreciate the ways we’re alike? Of all the planets in the universe, ours is the only one that we know of that currently supports life. And among that life, humans are so uniquely ‘human.’ Shouldn’t we spend a bit more energy appreciating the oneness of the human family than we spend accentuating and obsessing on our differences? After all, aren’t most people essentially the same? Surely if there is a God that loves his children, he is extremely disappointed with the divisions we draw amongst ourselves.
